Becoming a Christian
The Christian faith is one that focuses on the Good News of Jesus Christ’s life, ministry, resurrection, and His pending return. Scripture does not require anything else but a confession of faith. While some might focus on either the emotional, or the logical side, for a conversion experience, we hold Christianity to be transformative for the heart and the mind.
The Problem
“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
(Romans 3:23, ESV)
“As it is written: None is righteous, no, not one.”
(Romans 3:10, ESV)
Being separate from God by sin removes us from His love, grace and mercy. We become, in essence, enemies of God.
The Consequence
“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all me because all sinned” (Romans 5:12, ESV)
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Romans 6:23, ESV)
We all must face death some day. The death of which the apostle Paul speaks is death of the soul, as it is eternally separated from God, and cast into eternal punishment–hell.
The Scope
“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”
(Romans 1:20, ESV)
God is evident in what is seen in the universe around us, as well as in the things that cannot be seen by the eyes of men. His power in display before all humanity renders us unable to claim ignorance of God’s presence and might through creation.
The Solution
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(Romans 5:8, ESV)
While we may love people or items in many different ways and at different levels of affection, God loves us with a love of the will–It never ceases to chase after each one of us. The cross is a testament to this unconditional love.
The Response
“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.”
(Romans 10:9-10, ESV)
There is nothing more we must do to receive the gift of a relationship with God and eternal life, than to profess Him the Lord and Savior of our lives. His love for us is steadfast; we must make the willful decision to accept or deny Him and His love.
The Assurance
“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'”
(Romans 10:13, ESV)
We have grown accustomed to provisions and loopholes. This is not the case with God. His faithfulness is eternal and unwavering. He is always present and willful to keep His word.
The Result
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
(Romans 5:1, ESV)
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
(Romans 8:1, ESV)
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Romans 8:38-39, ESV)
As we surrender to such a powerful and all-encompassing love, we are transformed. We are no longer slaves to sin; enemies of God and His grace. We are forgiven and heirs of eternal life through Jesus Christ. We have access to a new life–a life without end.
